Confederate Guards Response Battalion Volunteer Infantry

[also known as 12th Battalion Volunteer Infantry; 16th Battalion Volunteer Infantry, Clack's Battalion Volunteer Infantry]

[Companies   A   B   C   D     F   ?]

From Sifakis, Compendium of C.S. Armies: Louisiana, 121-22:

Organization: Organized with two companies at New Orleans on March 6, 1862. Field consolidation with the 1st Florida Infantry Battalion as the Florida and Confederate Guards Infantry Battalion from April 1862 to July 17, 1862. The battalion reorganized at New Iberia in August 1862. A third company joined the battalion on September 10, 1862. Consolidated with the 10th Infantry Battalion and designated as the 33rd Infantry Regiment ca. October 10, 1862. This regiment was broken up and the battalions reorganized on November 21, 1862. Companies D and E joined the battalion at Alexandria in June 186[3]. However, Company D was a heavy artillery battery and continued to act as such independently. Company F was assigned to the battalion at Vermilionville in August 186[3]. Field consolidation with the 11th Infantry Battalion and Crescent Infantry Regiment from September 186[3] to October 186[3]. Permanently consolidated with the 11th Infantry Battalion and Crescent Infantry Regiment and designated as the Crescent Consolidated Infantry Regiment on November 3, 1863.

First Commander: Franklin H. Clack, MAJ, LTC [September 1862]; [Mercer Canfield, MAJ (September 1862)]

Assignments: Anderson’s Brigade, Ruggles’-Cheatham’s Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Mississippi, Department #2 (Mar-Apr 62); Moore’s Brigade, Cheatham’s-Ruggles’ Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Mississippi, Department #2 (Apr-May 62); Anderson’s Brigade, 2nd Corps, Army of the Mississippi, Department #2 (Jun-Jul 62); Anderson’s Brigade, Jones’ Division, Army of the Mississippi, Department #2 (Jul-Aug 62); MOUTON’s Brigade, District of West Louisiana, Trans-Mississippi Department (Nov 62-Nov 63)

Battles: Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862); Corinth Campaign (April-June 1862); Farmington (May 9, 1862); Fort Bisland (April 13-14, 1863); Irish Bend (April 14, 1863); Stirling’s Plantation (September 29, 1863)

From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 165-66:

"This battalion, sometimes called the 16th Louisiana Battalion, was organized in New Orleans on March 6, 1862, with two companies and 201 men. The battalion went to Corinth, Mississippi. On April 6 and 7, the men fought in the Battle of Shiloh, suffering 46 casualties out of the 150 men who went into the fight. About May 1, the battalion was united with a Florida infantry battalion. The battalion participated in the Battle of Farmington, May 9, but had few casualties. In August, the battalion was ordered to western Louisiana, and its connection with the Florida unit ceased. The battalion reorganized at New Iberia. On September 20, Canfield’s company joined the battalion. The men moved to a camp on Bayou Lafourche south of Donaldsonville in early October. About October 10, the battalion was merged with the 10th [Yellow Jackets] Louisiana Infantry Battalion to form the 33rd Louisiana Regiment. This regiment was broken up November 22, and the battalion was restored as a separate unit. The men occupied camps near New Iberia during the winter and early spring. They were at New Iberia during the Battle of Bisland, April 12-13, 1863. The battalion joined General Richard Taylor at Franklin on April 14 and fought in the Battle of Irish Bend. The men retreated with the army to Natchitoches. When Taylor led the army back into south Louisiana in June, the battalion remained at Alexandria as a provost guard. There King’s and Kelso’s companies joined the battalion. King’s company acted independently as a heavy artillery battery and was rarely, if ever, with the rest of the battalion. On August 22, the battalion joined the army at Vermilionville. There Ranson’s newly recruited company joined the battalion. On September 29, the battalion played a major role in the Battle of Stirling’s Plantation on Bayou Fordoche. The battalion was merged with the Crescent (24th) Louisiana Regiment and 11th Louisiana Battalion on November 3 at Simmesport to form the Consolidated Crescent Regiment."

Art Bergeron writes in Feb 1997: "a number of conscripts were placed in the original companies"
