From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 93-95:

"One of the most distinguished Louisiana units in the war, this regiment was organized at Camp Moore on July 6, 1861, with 949 men.  Proceeding to Virginia, the regiment arrived at Manassas too late on July 21 to participate in the battle fought there.  Assigned to the 1st Louisiana Brigade with the 6th, 7th, and 8th Louisiana regiments and Wheat's Tiger Battalion, the regiment went into the Shenandoah Valley to join General Stonewall Jackson's army in May, 1862.  Company A participated in the capture of Front Royal on May 23.  The regiment fought at Middletown, May 24; at Winchester, May 25; at Strasburg, June 1; and at Port Republic, June 9.  At the Battle of Gaines' Mill, June 27, the men suffered fewer than 20 casualites.  The regiment saw limited fighting at Malvern Hill on July 1.  On July 26, the 2nd Louisiana Brigade was formed with the 1st, 2nd, 9th, 10th, and 15th Louisiana regiments and Coppens' Zouave Battalion.  The regiment was lightly engaged at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, August 9.  During the 2nd Manassas Campaign, August 28-30, the regiment suffered nearly 100 casualties.  When the regiment ran out of ammunition on August 30, the men threw rocks at the attacking enemy soldiers until new ammunition could be brought up.  A private of Company D was said to have killed Union general Philip Kearney during the Battle of Chantilly, September 1.  The regiment was heavily engaged in the Battle of Sharpsburg, September 17, and suffered 82 casualties.  On October 5, the regiment transferred back to the 1st Louisiana Brigade in exchange for the 14th Louisiana Regiment and was thereafter always associated with the brigade.  Though the regiment was held in reserve at the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 12 of its men were killed or wounded by enemy artillery fire.  The men again saw heavy fighting at Chancellorsville, May 3-4, while defending Marye's Heights and attacking the enemy at Salem Church.  At the Battle of Winchester, June 14, the regiment participated in the main attack, which overran the enemy.  The regiment was in the attack at Gettysburg, July 1, which routed the Federal XI Corps.  In the night attack on Cemetery Hill, July 2, the regiment temporarily captured several enemy cannons but had to retreat because of lack of support.  A small detachment of the regiment joined a similar group from the 5th Louisiana Regiment on September 16 to make a quick raid across the Rapidan River at Raccoon Ford.  The raiders killed several men and captured 42 others of the 5th New York Cavalry.  In the Battle of Rappahannock Station, November 7, the regiment was at first in reserve.  The men made a counterattack to try to recover the cannons of the Louisiana Guard Artillery, but 130 officers and enlisted men were captured by the enemy in the attempt.  The remnants of the regiment fought in the Battle of the Wildnerness, May 5, 1864, and at the Mule Shoe in the Battle of Spotsylvania, May 12.  In June, the brigade went to the Shenandoah Valley and participated in all of the battles fought there during the summer and fall of that year.  The men rejoined the main army in December and served in the trenches at Petersburg until the evacuation of that place on April 2, 1865.  When the army surrendered at Appomattox, on April 9, the regiment was the strongest of all the Louisiana units, with 4 officers and 64 enlisted men.  In the course of the war, approximately 1,474 men served in the regiment.  Of that number, 233 were killed, 349 died of disease, and 4 died in accidents; this was the highest death rate of all Louisiana units in Virginia.  At least 115 men deserted the regiment.  Three of the regiment's 4 colonels became generals during the war."
