From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 75-76:

"This regiment was organized May 11, 1861, at Camp Walker, New Orleans, with 1,013 men.  Ordered to Richmond, Virginia, the regiment moved from there to Yorktown and helped to build earthwork defenses near the town.  After several months at Yorktown, the men went to Williamsburg and again erected fortifications.  The regiment spent the winter in the Yorktown area.  On April 16, 1862, the enemy attacked the regiment's position at Dam No. 1, or Lee's Mill, and drove part of the regiment from its rifle pits.  Companies A and C participated in a bayonet charge, which drove he enemy back.  The regiment served in General Howell Cobb's brigade during the Seven Days' Battles near Richmond but saw no fighting until July 1 at Malvern Hill.  In that battle, the colonel and the major both fell, and the regiment's casualties totaled 182 men killed or wounded.  On July 26, the regiment joined a brigade that included the 1st, 9th, 10th, and 15th Louisiana regiments and Coppens' Zouave Battalion.  After being lightly engaged at Cedar Mountain, August 9, the regiment saw heavy fighting at the Battle of 2nd Manassas, August 28-30; nearly 130 men were killed or wounded.  The men participated in the capture of Harper's Ferry, September 14, and fought in the Battle of Sharpsburg, September 17.  At the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, the regiment saw only light skirmishing.  With its brigade, the regiment participated in General Stonewall Jackson's famous assault at Chancellorsville, May 2, 1863, and lost more than 100 men.  The regiment fought in the Battle of Winchester, June 15, and, with the 10th Louisiana Infantry, captured about 1,000 enemy prisoners.  On July 2 and 3, the regiment participated in the attack on Culp's Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg.  The men fought in the Bristoe Station Campaign, October 9-22, and the Mine Run Campaign, November 26-December 2, but suffered few casualties.  After the regiment fought in the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864, its position was overrun at Spotsylvania, May 12, and its flag fell into enemy hands.  From Spotsylvania, the regiment went with its brigade into the Shenandoah Valley.  During General Jubal Early's advance toward Washington, D.C, the regiment fought in the Battle of Monocacy, July 9.  Later, the men participated in the battles of Winchester, September 19; Fisher's Hill, September 21-22; and Cedar Creek, October 19.  Returning to the Army of Northern Virginia at Petersburg, the regiment served through the siege of that place during the winter of 1864 and early spring of 1865.  When the regiment surrendered at Appomattox Court House, only 3 officers and 41 men were present to sign paroles.  Approximately 1,297 men served in the regiment.  During the war, 218 men were killed, 181 died of disease, and 4 died in accidents.  Approximately 88 men deserted during the war."

SPECIAL NOTE

There seems to be confusion in the CSRC & Booth about the placement of men in companies E & H of this regiment.  Men with Cajun surnames whom the records place in Company E, a Jackson Parish unit from the northern part of the state, may very well belong to Company H, a Pointe Coupee outfit.  It makes no sense that men with names like Bordelon, Coulon, Gauthier, Guillot, Hebert, Juneau, Laborde, Lacour, Mayeux, Moreau, Picou, Roy, & Tassin, all prominent Pointe Coupee Parish families, would have served in a unit from Jackson Parish.  Yet that is where the CSRC places them.  However, I will follow Bergeron and logic here and place all men in Company E with these AIG family names in Company H.
