"Organized about March 1, 1862, at Red River Landing with 130 officers and enlisted men, the battery was to serve as Company B, Miles’ Legion Artillery, but often acted independently of the legion. After a short period of training at Camp Benjamin near New Orleans in early April, the battery moved to Camp Moore during the evacuation of the Crescent City. The battery occupied camps near Fayette, Mississippi, from June to mid-August, when it received orders to report to the garrison at Port Hudson, Louisiana. The men participated in bombardments of the gunboat Anglo-American on August 29 and of the Anglo-American and the ironclad Essex on September 7. On December 13, the men moved three of their guns across the Mississippi River and down to a point near Profit Island. The next morning, they opened fire on the wooden gunboat Winona, causing considerable damage to it before the Essex could escort it to safety. Detachments of the battery and two guns participated in the expedition aboard the cottonclad steamer Dr. Beatty against the enemy ironclad Indianola, which resulted in the capture of the vessel near Natchez, Mississippi, on February 24, 1863. On May 21, the battery fought in the Battle of Plains Store, east of Port Hudson. During the siege of Port Hudson, May 23-July 9, 1863, the battery helped defend the southern end, or right wing, of the earthwork entrenchments. The men broke up several enemy assaults with their accurate cannon fire. At the surrender of the garrison, the men went home on parole. Lieutenant Maunsel Bennett had escaped prior to the surrender, and in November, 1863, he began reorganizing the battery near Alexandria. Reentering active service on December 12, the men at first had no cannons and acted as a provost guard at Natchitoches. In March, 1864, probably at Shreveport, the men received two heavy artillery pieces mounted on siege carriages and pulled by oxen. During the closing stages of the Red River Campaign, the battery left behind those two guns and took over two 30-pounder Parrott rifled cannons captured from enemy gunboats. The men fought in the skirmish at Mansura on May 16. On June 8, in a skirmish with three enemy gunboats on the Atchafalaya River north of Simmesport, the enemy fire drove the men away from one of the Parrotts, allowing a landing party to capture it. The other gun burst during the engagement and later had to be scrapped. The battery served in the Alexandria defenses for the remainder of the war, occupying Fort Buhlow near Pineville. Orders issued November 19 designated the men as the 2^nd Louisiana Field Battery even though they manned heavy, or siege, cannons. Most of the men disbanded upon the surrender of the Trans-Mississippi Department in late May, 1865, but a few officers and enlisted men received their paroles at Alexandria on June 3."
