From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 53:
"This unit was organized in June, 1864, probably at Clinton, by the joining and mounting of fragments of infantry units serving in the area. Colonel John S. Scott, commanding the area, had requested formation of the regiment as support for his artillery batteries operating along the Mississippi River. Some records erroneously refer to the unit as the 5th Louisiana Cavalry. The men participated in a skirmish at Doyal’s Plantation below Baton Rouge on August 5, 1864. With Powers’ Regiment, Gober’s men helped drive an enemy force from Thompson’s Creek near Jackson to St. Francisville on October 5. Later in the day, the two regiments moved toward Woodville, Mississippi, to intercept another enemy raid. On the morning of October 6, the enemy attacked them and drove them back. Toward the end of October, the six Louisiana companies serving in Powers’ Regiment, which was disbanded, received orders to report to Gober to give him a full regiment. During a Federal raid on Liberty, Mississippi, portions of the regiment fought in skirmishes at Merritt’s Plantation, November 15, and at Liberty, November 18. As part of Scott’s cavalry brigade, the regiment followed an enemy raiding party from Baton Rouge to Pascagoula, Mississippi, in early December. After a short rest near Mobile, Alabama, the brigade moved to northern Mississippi. A small portion of the regiment fought in a skirmish at Franklin, Mississippi, on January 2, 1865. In late December, 1864, or January, 1865, the five companies that had originally composed part of the 18th Louisiana Cavalry Battalion were ordered back into that organization. Gober soon assumed command of Scott’s brigade, and the remaining companies of the regiment became part of Colonel Fred N. Ogden’s new cavalry regiment."
