Assumption Parish Regiment Militia

"Both of these units [Lafourche and St. James parish regiments of militia] existed as a part of the Louisiana militia prior to and early during the war. My recollection was that, due to the Conscription Act of April 1862, the militia had to be reorganized. Governor Moore asked some of the regiments to go into active service to protect their parishes after the fall of New Orleans. There were some problems with keeping many of the men in camp, but Dick Taylor found parts of the Lafourche, St. James, Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, and perhaps other regiments on duty when he assumed command of the District of Western Louisiana in August 1862. Some of the units were involved in the capture of the Union posts at Bayou des Allemands and Boutte Station in September 1862 and the Lafourche Campaign of October 1862. My memory is hazy, but I think Taylor ordered the militia disbanded in November or December 1862…."
