From Bergeron, LA Confed. Units, 142, 169-70:

30th Regiment

"This regiment was organized at Camp Moore on May 15, 1862, with 804 men. The unit had originally been mustered into state service in New Orleans on December 17, 1861, as the Sumter Regiment and was transferred to Confederate service for ninety days on March 1, 1862. Upon the evacuation of New Orleans, April 25, three and a half companies remained in the city and were captured. The other six and a half companies went to Camp Moore. There General Mansfield Lovell added four new companies to bring the unit back to regimental strength. Company K went home on furlough and never returned, since the enemy controlled that portion of the state. The regiment remained at Camp Moore until August 5, when it participated in the Battle of Baton Rouge. In that battle, 58 men of the regiment were killed, wounded, or missing. The remaining men marched to Port Hudson after the battle and became part of the garrison there. They did outpost and picket duty and helped construct the entrenchments in the area. In February, 1863, the War Department ordered the reduction of the regiment to a battalion of seven companies. On March 4, Companies H and I were disbanded and the men were distributed among the other companies. The new 30th Louisiana Battalion retained the regiment’s number, and records frequently call it the 30th Louisiana Regiment."

30th Battalion

"This battalion was formed at Port Hudson on March 4, 1863, when two companies of the 30th Louisiana Infantry Regiment were disbanded and their men distributed among the remaining seven companies. Frequently, the records refer to the battalion as a regiment. The battalion occupied part of the entrenchments at Port Hudson until May 6, when it marched with General Samuel B. Maxey’s brigade to Jackson, Mississippi. A small detachment of the battalion remained at Port Hudson and served there during the siege, May 23-July 9, on the right wing of the Confederate defenses. The battalion participated in the Siege of Jackson, July 6-17, and retreated with General Joseph E. Johnston’s army to Morton. In August, the men received orders to report at Mobile, Alabama, and they served in the garrison there until November. At that time, the battalion went to Dalton, Georgia, to reinforce the Army of Tennessee, which had just retreated from Chattanooga. The battalion returned to Mobile after a couple of months and garrisoned Fort Gaines at the mouth of Mobile Bay. On May 21, 1864, the battalion received orders to report to the Army of Tennessee and joined it at New Hope Church. The men became part of General Randall L. Gibson’s Louisiana brigade in July. They fought at Atlanta, July 22, and at Ezra Church, July 28. In the latter battle, the enemy captured the battalion’s flag, and nearly three-fourths of the men were killed or wounded. The battalion went with the army on its invasion of Tennessee, and most of the remaining men became prisoners at the Battle of Nashville, December 17. In February, 1865, the remnants of the battalion were consolidated with the 4th and 13th Louisiana regiments and the 14th Louisiana Battalion. The consolidated unit fought in the Siege of Spanish Fort near Mobile, Alabama, March 27-April 8. When it surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, on May 8, 1865, only 59 officers and enlisted men of the battalion were still present for duty."

From Bergeron, LA Confed. Units, 181:

"In the early months of 1862 (February-April), Governor Thomas O. Moore arranged with Major General Mansfield Lovell to transfer three brigades of militiamen to Confederate service.  Lovell accepted the eleven regiments and two battalions of 'Volunteer State Troops' for the defense of New Orleans.  It appears, however, that Lovell had few, if any, of the men formally mustered into regular Confederate service.  Most of the men went into camps around the city for drill and discipline.  Napier Bartlett's Military Record of Louisiana places the strength of the three brigades at 9,113 men, but they probably had no more than half that number ready for active duty.  Lovell ordered the Chalmette Regiment to the Quarantine Station, six miles upriver from Fort St. Philip, to guard the rear of that bastion.  Bartlett gives the following account of the fate of these units: 'When the gunboats [of Union Flag Officer David G. Farragut] passed the forts [Jackson and St. Phillip] and Lovell carried off all transportation, [the regiments] were disbanded by Gen. [E. L.] Tracy.'  Farragut's vessels captured and paroled all of the men of the Chalmette Regiment at the Quarantine Station on April 24.  Many of the officers and enlisted men of the other units escaped the city before it surrendered and accompanied Lovell's regulars to Camp Moore.  Only one unit, the Sumter Regiment, maintained its organization; and it later became the nucleus for the 30th Louisiana Infantry Regiment.  Bartlett's account goes on to say, 'When [General Benjamin F.] Butler arrived, the officers and men [in New Orleans] were arrested as prisoners of war, paroled, and those who did not take the oath, were exchanged on the 8th of October following, being delivered at Vicksburg.'  While the majority of these 'Volunteer State Troops' took the oath, a number did find their way into Louisiana units on active duty in the Vicksburg area."
