2nd (Dupeire's) Battalion Zouaves Volunteer Infantry

[Companies  A   B   ?]

From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 155:

"Governor Thomas O. Moore apparently authorized the formation of this battalion in June, 1861, but it was not until March, 1862, that Company A was mustered into Confederate service in New Orleans.  Company B was mustered in on April 22.  The two companies numbered 165 men.  At the evacuation of New Orleans, the companies went to Camp Moore.  The battalion was probably formally organized there in early May.  General Mansfield Lovell ordered the battalion to Vicksburg, Mississippi.  The men probably did picket duty near the city during the first Federal campaign against it, from May 19 to July 27.  On July 5, the Secretary of War ordered the battalion to report to the 1st [Coppens'] Louisiana Zouave Battalion in Virginia, probably intending to form a Zouave regiment.  Major Dupeire protested the order, and the battalion was allowed to remain at Vicksburg.  On October 3 and 4, the battalion fought in the Battle of Corinth; 2 of its men were killed and 14 were wounded.  The battalion returned to Vicksburg following the battle.  Later, the companies were attached to Waul's Texas Legion.  The men served with the legion during the Siege of Vicskburg, May 19-July 4, 1863.  At the surrender of Vicksburg, the men went home on parole.  In late 1863, Major Dupeire attempted to collect some of the men and recruit new men to form a battalion of mounted troops in south Louisiana.  He succeeded in forming two companies and went into camp at Bayou Portage.  On November 23, Federal troops surprised and overran the camp, capturing the battalion flag, 1 officer, and 25 enlisted men.  General Richard Taylor broke up the battalion in January 1864, because it had very few men left in it."
