Port Republic, VA

June 9, 1862

Looking east.  Confederates crossed cultivated fields, left to right, to attack Federal line near center of picture.

Looking north.  The Federal line was positioned along road, facing west, left and fired upon the advancing Confederates.

Looking west from Federal line to the right.  To the left atop high ground Federal artillery fired at advancing Confederates in the fields to the right front, forcing them to take cover amongst the crops.  This artillery position was at the Coaling.

Federal guns were placed at the Coaling atop ground in center of picture, facing camera.  Louisiana troops attacked this position three times from the right front.  Confederate reinforcements arrived and broke Federal resistance, forcing them to retreat.
