"This battery was organized at New Orleans about July
1, 1861; A. C. Watson, a wealthy planter of Tensas parish, equipped the
battery, which had four 6-pounder bronze smoothbore guns and two 2-pounder
howitzers. In August, the battery went to a camp on Lake Bruin
near St. Joseph and drilled there for about a month. Traveling up
the Mississippi River via Memphis, the battery reported for duty at Columbus,
Kentucky, about October 1. At the Battle of Belmont, November
7, the men were in action for the first time. Two guns fell into
Federal hands when enemy fire killed or wounded all of the horses, and
casualties amounted to 2 men killed and 8 wounded and captured. In late
December, the battery reported to Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Assigned to the brigade of Colonel John S. Bowen, the men accompanied the
brigade to Corinth, Mississippi, in February, 1862. The
battery participated in the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6-7,
serving on the right flank of the army. Only one or two of the men
suffered any injuries. The battery remained in northern Mississippi
when General Braxton Bragg's army marched into Kentucky. On October 3
and 4, the battery participated in the Battle of Corinth. It
helped cover the retreat of the Confederate forces in an engagement at Tuscumbia
River Bridge on October 5. In early 1863, the battery
moved to Port Hudson, Louisiana, to reinforce the garrison there.
The men served at various times under Generals Albert Rust, Abraham Buford,
and Samuel B. Maxey at Port Hudson. Two guns were added to the
battery, and Lieutenant E. A. Toledano assumed command when Captain Bursley
transferred to ordnance duty. During the siege of Port Hudson, May
23-July 9, 1863, two sections of the battery served along the Confederate
center, and one section held a position on the Confederate left.
Following the surrender of Port Hudson, the men reported to a parole
camp at Enterprise, Mississippi. In late 1863, the men
received orders to join a Mississippi battery and the Watson Battery ceased to
exist. During the war, 13 of the battery's men were killed in battle, 1
was killed in an accident, and 17 died of disease."
