8th Regiment Volunteer Cavalry

[Companies  F&S  A   B   C   D   E   F   G   H   I   K]

From Sifakis, Compendium of C.S. Armies: Louisiana, 52-53:

Organization:  Organized by the consolidation of the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Battalions, State Guards, to a regiment on October 27, 1864.  Surrendered by General E. K. Smith, commanding Trans-Mississippi Department, on May 26, 1865.

First Commander:  Benjamin W. Clark, LTC [Bergeron says COL]

Field Officers:  Thomas J. Caldwell, MAJ; Samuel McCutcheon, LTC.

Assignments:  1st (VINCENT's-Brent's) Louisiana Cavalry Brigade, 1st Louisiana Cavalry Division, 1st Corps, Trans-Mississippi Department (Oct 64-May 65)

Bergeron, LA Confed. Units, 52:

"This regiment was organized October 27, 1864, probably in south Louisiana, by the combining of the 1st and 2nd Louisiana State Guards Cavalry battalions.  The men performed picket and outpost duty along the lower Bayou Teche and the upper Atchafalaya River during most of their service.  They made up part of a cavalry brigade commanded by General Joseph L. Brent while on those duties.  Portions of the regiment participated in brief campaigns against Jayhawkers and deserters in western St. Landry Parish in the early months of 1865.  Confederate authorities may have dismounted the regiment late in the war.  The regiment appears to have been near Natchitoches or Mansfield at the surrender, in May, 1865."
