From Bergeron, LA Confed. Units, 140-41:

"This regiment was organized at Camp Moore on May 3, 1862, by the addition of five companies to a battalion formed by Thomas for state service. The regiment left for Vicksburg, Mississippi, on May 20, and arrived the next day. During the first Federal attack on Vicksburg, May 18-July 27, the regiment did picket and guard duty near Warrenton, south of the city. The men remained in the Vicksburg area through the summer and fall [1862], drilling and doing picket duty. On December 27, the regiment moved to Chickasaw Bluffs north of Vicksburg to assist in the defense of that area. The regiment repulsed the enemy attacks on December 28 and 29; 9 men were killed, 25 were wounded, and 9 were missing. Again the regiment went through a period of inactivity, until the beginning of the Siege of Vicksburg, May 19, 1863. The regiment originally occupied trenches on the Confederate left flank near Fort Hill. On May 22, the regiment moved to the support of General John H. Forney’s division during one of the major Union assaults. After this attack, the men returned to their old position. During the siege, 16 men of the regiment were killed and 57 were wounded. Paroled after the surrender on July 4, the remaining men marched to a camp at Enterprise. The men went home on furlough after several months in this camp. In the summer of 1864, the regiment was ordered into camp near Alexandria and returned to active duty. Many of the men chose not to return to duty and remained at their homes. The regiment remained in the Alexandria-Pineville area until May, 1865. At that time, it marched to Mansfield, where the men disbanded on May 19."

SPECIAL NOTE

I have found apparent confusion in the CSRC & Booth between this regiment, often referred to as the 28th Infantry, and the 28th (Gray's) Regiment Volunteer Infantry.  A number of men listed in the CSRC & Booth as belonging to various companies of the 28th (Gray's) Regiment obviously belong to companies of the same letters in the 29th (Thomas') Regiment.  My reasoning for this assertion is as follows:  The companies of Gray's Regiment, according to Bergeron, LA Confed. Units, 138, came from the parishes of Bienville, Bossier, Jackson, Claiborne, and Winn, all of which are located in the central and northern, predominantly Anglo, part of Louisiana.  The companies of Thomas' Regiment, according to Bergeron, 140, came from the parishes of DeSoto and Carroll, found in north Louisiana, and St. Landry, Ascension, Assumption, and Calcasieu, which are located in the predominantly French-speaking southern part of the state.  It makes no sense that a man with an Acadian/Cajun surname who is listed in the records as belonging to Company A, Gray's Regiment would have served in a company raised in Bienville Parish, where few people of French origin lived, when Company A of Thomas' Regiment was raised in St. Landry Parish, a predominantly French parish, especially when the record reveals that he lived in St. Landry Parish!  So I would place him in Thomas' Regiment, not Gray's.  The same holds true for men with Acadian/Cajun surnames whom the records place in Company E of Gray's Regiment, which was raised in Winn Parish, while Company E of Thomas' Regiment came from Ascension; Company H of Gray's Regiment, which came from Bienville, while Company H of Thomas' Regiment hailed from Assumption; and Company K of Gray's Regiment, which also came from Winn, while Company K of Thomas' Regiment came out of St. Landry.  Evidently the compilers of the CSRC & Booth confused these units when they created their respective records.  I have done my best here to unravel this tangled business.
